Label Materials for Products and Packaging

Labels carry brand information, product claims, barcodes, ingredients, and compliance details. The material needs to match the container surface, storage environment, and expected handling.

Paper Labels

Paper labels are cost-effective and work well for dry environments, cartons, jars, and many standard retail products. They can support matte, gloss, textured, or premium finishes.

Paper is not the best choice when the label will face moisture, oil, refrigeration, or heavy rubbing unless it is protected with the right coating or lamination.

Film Labels

Film labels such as PP, PE, PET, and vinyl are chosen when the label needs better resistance to water, tearing, abrasion, or curved surfaces. They are common for bottles, personal care products, food jars, pouches, and products handled frequently.

Film labels can also be used for clear-label looks, where the product or container color shows through the label.

Adhesive Matters

The adhesive is as important as the face material. A label that works on a paper box may not work on a cold bottle, flexible pouch, textured jar, or oily surface.

Before choosing adhesive, confirm:

• The container material.
• Whether the surface is flat, curved, rough, or flexible.
• Storage temperature and humidity.
• Whether the label needs to be removable or permanent.
• Whether the product may contact oil, water, or condensation.

Finish and Readability

Gloss finishes can make color look more vibrant. Matte finishes feel softer and reduce glare. Transparent labels can look premium, but white ink may be needed behind text or graphics so the artwork remains readable.

Small text, barcodes, and regulatory information should be tested at final size. A beautiful label is not successful if the barcode cannot scan or the ingredient panel is hard to read.

Practical Selection Rule

Use paper labels for dry, standard retail surfaces. Use film labels when moisture, flexibility, durability, or clear-label appearance matters. Then choose adhesive based on the actual container and storage conditions.
