Color is one of the most sensitive parts of packaging production. A color can look different on screen, on coated paper, on kraft paper, on clear film, on foil laminate, or under a matte finish.

Screens Are Not Print Proofs

Screens use light. Printing uses ink on a physical material. Bright RGB colors, gradients, and neon tones may not reproduce exactly in CMYK printing.

For important brand colors, use physical references or approved printed samples instead of relying only on a digital preview.

Material Changes Color

White coated paper reflects color differently from kraft paper, clear film, metallic laminate, or textured paper. The same artwork can appear cleaner, warmer, darker, or less saturated depending on the surface.

If color accuracy is important, material should be confirmed before final color approval.

Finishing Also Changes Appearance

Gloss lamination can make colors look richer. Matte lamination can soften contrast. Soft-touch finishes may reduce sharpness slightly. Foil, embossing, and spot UV create contrast between texture and reflection, not only color.

Finishing should be treated as part of the color plan.

Use Practical References

Good color communication may include:

  • Pantone or spot color references.
  • Previous approved production samples.
  • Printed proofs on similar material.
  • Clear notes about acceptable variation.
  • Separate instructions for white ink or metallic areas.

Expect Reasonable Tolerance

Custom packaging is a production process, not a screen render. Some variation can happen between materials, print runs, machines, and finishing processes.

The best way to control risk is to approve color on the closest possible material and process before mass production.
